    The city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is home to one of the greatest hockey players of all time, Mario Lemieux. Lemieux’s accomplishments on the ice have been well-documented, but his lasting impact off the ice may be even greater. In 1984, Lemieux was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins and quickly became the face of the franchise.     1. After his retirement from playing in 1997, Lemieux continued to be involved in the Pittsburgh hockey community. In 1999, he became part owner and chairman of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and he has been a driving force behind the team’s success ever since. Lemieux has also been an active contributor to the community of Pittsburgh. In 1993, he founded the Mario Lemieux Foundation, which is dedicated to finding a cure for cancer and helping children with life-threatening illnesses. The foundation has raised millions of dollars and has provided financial assistance to thousands of families. In addition to the Mario Lemieux Foundation, Lemieux has been involved in an array of charitable efforts around Pittsburgh. He has been a frequent donor to the United Way, the Salvation Army, and other organizations that help those in need. He has also been a strong advocate for youth hockey programs in the city, including the Mario Lemieux Hockey School, which provides an opportunity for young players to learn the game from some of the best coaches in the world.
